Vice-Captain

Pakistani sports fans are worried as hockey megastar Abubakar Mahmood, the vice-captain of the national team, struggles to get the financial support needed for an urgent knee surgical operation. Mahmood’s injury has highlighted the shortage of timely hospital therapy and aid for athletes representing the nation. For fans and fellow players, this raises an urgent question: Why isn’t the system taking care of its athletes?

During a crucial group-stage match against India in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, Mahmood suffered excessive knee damage that sidelined him from the relaxation of the event, consisting of the important semi-final match. Despite promises from officials, the hockey megastar remains waiting for help.

Broken Promises from Authorities

Mahmood has expressed frustration with the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and national authorities, claiming that they have failed to provide the necessary treatment. PHF President Tariq Bugti promised to arrange medical care for Mahmood, yet no action has been taken. Similarly, Rana Mashhood, Chairman of the Prime Minister Youth Programme, assured Mahmood that treatment would be arranged, but Mahmood says that no progress has been made since his return home.

Financial Constraints Leave Mahmood in Limbo

The PHF has cited financial constraints as the main reason for the delay, advising Mahmood to pay for his surgery upfront and offering a promise of reimbursement when funds become available. However, Mahmood does not have the necessary resources to cover the costs of surgery, especially if it needs to be done abroad. The situation has left him stuck without proper treatment, potentially worsening his injury.

Risk of Complications Looms

The longer Mahmood goes without surgery, the greater the risk of long-term complications. Fans are worried that a player of his caliber might face permanent damage if not treated soon. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid has stated that they are committed to ensuring Mahmood gets the care he needs, but actions speak louder than words. Mujahid has also sent a letter to the prime minister requesting financial assistance, but Mahmood’s treatment remains in limbo.

A Call for Urgent Action

The delay in Mahmood’s treatment has sparked concern among Pakistan’s sports community. The government and hockey federation must act quickly to ensure that athletes like Vice-Captain Mahmood, who put their bodies on the line for their country, receive the medical care they deserve. Fans, too, are calling for an urgent resolution before the injury worsens.

Will Abubakar Mahmood get the support he needs? For now, he waits, along with the fans, hoping that promises turn into action.
