In this situation, where Lahore smog has been causing panic, the Lahore High Court (LHC) agreed to discuss the proposal to protect public health with new measures. Authorities pushed the change as the level of air quality in Lahore and other parts of Punjab reached hazardous levels, thus considering the implementation of three-day weekends for schools and two days for offices, compelling all the employees to work from home. Such policies will significantly reduce pollution since commuters will be reduced to minimum along with the decrease in commercial activities.
Severe Smog Pushes Authorities to Act
Justice Shahid Karim recently presided over an environmental session addressing the Lahore smog situation, urging the city’s environmental commission to revisit previous year’s successful methods. Among the proposed changes are school closures on Fridays and Saturdays, and a citywide commercial shutdown on Sundays. Additionally, to reduce daily vehicle emissions, officials are also considering two work-from-home days for businesses and offices in Lahore.
Stricter Vehicle Emission Controls to Reduce Air Pollution
The court emphasized that the heavy-duty vehicles, such as buses and trucks, are one of the major contributors to the problems of air quality in Lahore. To ensure better emission standards, inspections at bus terminals will be more strict, and highway fitness standards of vehicles in Lahore will be monitored strictly.
Court Challenges “Green Lockdown” Policy for Long-Term Smog Solutions
The LHC voiced concerns over the “Green Lockdown” policy, warning that it might only shift pollution to other parts of the city instead of truly decreasing it. The court recommended more impactful, targeted actions that go beyond temporary solutions and aim for sustained improvements in Lahore’s air quality. This comes as part of an ongoing effort to reduce public health risks caused by the city’s poor air quality.

Combatting Smog for a Safer, Healthier Lahore
With smog levels impacting daily life, these proposed measures reflect an urgent response to the rising pollution levels in Lahore. By reducing traffic, curtailing commercial activity, and enforcing vehicle emission standards, the LHC hopes to alleviate the immediate health risks of Lahore smog and inspire long-term environmental reforms.
