Cancer

Cancer has become an alarming public health issue in Pakistan, and a huge number of experts attribute diminishing-quality oil as the primary cause behind this situation. Millions of people are at risk of cancer, asthma and other diseases by using substandard oil in everyday cooking due to harmful chemicals. For families and individuals, this poses a real risk to their health; yet many are not aware that the oils they have been using daily might actually be extremely damaging.

Alarming Health Concerns Raised by Experts

Ghulam Mustafa Mehmood, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Petroleum, recently brought attention to the poor quality of oil produced by local refineries. He stressed that these low-grade oils are directly linked to increasing cancer rates in Pakistan. In a meeting on Thursday, Mehmood highlighted that local refineries are producing oil that does not meet global health standards, putting millions at risk of diseases like cancer and asthma.

Local Refineries Under Scrutiny

Mehmood emphasized that five major refineries in Pakistan must sign agreements by October 22 to comply with international oil standards. The refined oil currently produced only meets Euro 2 standards, which are far below the global benchmarks. This means the oils are of lower quality, filled with harmful contaminants, and can cause serious health problems when used regularly.

Despite these pressing issues, many refineries have failed to improve their output quality. During the meeting, the Director General of Oil acknowledged that local refineries were not meeting higher standards, while Pakistan State Oil’s Managing Director supported providing financial incentives for the refineries to encourage them to upgrade.

The Public’s Health at Stake

The impact of using low-grade oil is being felt across the country. With poor regulation and substandard practices, millions of people are being exposed to harmful toxins every day. Chairman Mehmood called for urgent action to ensure that refineries prioritize public safety over profit, but despite these calls, progress has been slow.

Final Thoughts!

Improving oil quality in Pakistan is not just a matter of upgrading technology—it’s about protecting lives. Consumers must also be aware of the dangers posed by low-quality oil and seek healthier alternatives. The government, refineries, and health authorities must work together to ensure that no family is left vulnerable to diseases caused by everyday cooking oil.
